Jaga Jazzist - Bananfleur Overalt Minimix

It's been 27 days since I've checked my inbox and surely enough there is a goodie from Ninja Tune Records...

Norway's most famous and acclaimed nine-piece jazz/alt.rock/prog/baroque/afro-beat masters return to the fray with a new EP drawing on their recent album, "One-Armed Bandit"."Bananfluer Overalt" is a mixture of epic refrains, polyrhythmic mania and fiendish musicianship, sophistication and naivety being slammed together so hard that they fracture into something else altogether.

After that brief reminder of the wonders of Jaga, though, Lars Horntveth and co call in the remixers. Sprutbass comes straight out of the Scandinavian Skweee scene centred around the dødpop label. In keeping with the central tenets of the sound, Sprutbass reimagines “One-Armed Bandit” as three million synths riding to Valhalla on the back of a giant mechanical bird built on the offcuts of Chic’s leather jackets. FINAL (known to his mum as Magnus August Hoiberg) takes "220v / Spektral" and makes it into sunny disco/electro. Animator and producer Andreas Paleologos aka Cuckoo, on the other hand, turns "Touch of Evil" into the soundtrack for the heartbreaking sibling rivalry of Mario and Luigi, before Prins Thomas rounds things out with a slow-building and utterly epic 11 minute "Diskomiks" of the title track, held together by a low-slung baggy groove.

Holiday for Strings

Pony, from Thieves Like Us, was kind enough to drop me some great new tracks from his other band called 'Holiday for Strings' which also features John from Peter, Bjorn, and John. This month they have released their 2nd album on Seayou Records and it's definitely worth the purchase.

A little more about Holiday for Strings:

Holiday for Strings is the name of an old show tune from the 1930's that was composed by David Rose. It's probably one of the most upbeat songs ever written. When the band Holiday for Strings named themselves after the tune, they had never actually heard it.

The band is made up of five Swedish guys, of which three are former professional chefs. The other two are John from Peter, Bjorn and John, and Pony, from the group Thieves Like Us.

The group's music is a subtle mixture- post rock, kraut rock, pop, disco, and dub music all turn up in their experimental recipes. The band has existed on and off for about five years, slowly perfecting its unique musical blend.

Their first full-length release was titled CD and came out in 2006 on Stilll recordings. It's a post rocking, groove based album that earned them an opening slot on the 2007 European tour with Peter, Bjorn and John. The album was described by the music magazine Wire as "an unholy alliance between The Monochrome Set and the B52's."

In 2008 they recorded a 3 song EP, Two of You, released as a double 7" on Kanine Records NYC (Chairlift, Holy Hail, the Whip, etc). The title track was remixed by The Toxic Avenger, and Holiday for Strings toured the UK.

Their new album, Favorite Flavor, due out in Europe in March 2010, is released by Sea You records (Paper bird, Thieves Like Us, Japanther, etc), and was recorded at the imperial Murlyn studios, just outside of Stockholm, a wooden mansion built in the 1600's which was originally the king's summertime and love get-away.

The band will be touring the major cities of Europe in April and May, 2010, so prepare yourself for their unique performance, involving strawberries, chocolate fondues, and various wild animals.

Podcast #8- Unsentimental

February is the shortest month of the year but what we all seem to forget (especially us East coast peeps) is that the days are long and dreary with no shortage of precipitation. It's cold, slushy, and very indoor friendly. Fortunately, this year we have the Olympics and copious amounts of Stephen Colbert. As the Assistant Sports Psychologist of the U.S. speed skating team, he was quoted by saying, "The players relate to me because I provided them with cash. Okay? That's the kind of bond that you can't just get by being competent." Humor and sports. What else does one need on tv while in comatose state? Well, maybe this month's featured podcast. Presumptuous or not, it's ready for download.

The second month of the year features predominantly new artists such as Will Hoge, Neon Indian, Washed Out, Free Energy, The Features, Odessa, Chew Lips, and Lindstrom & Christabelle. There are some tracks that definitely lend itself more to the summer than the winter. But hey, it's brutal outside and I need to dream about warm weather to keep my sanity. Perhaps this isn't the best mix from the CYM collection, nevertheless it's relevant. Why? Because I fucking said so...

Vampire Weekend’s video for “Giving Up the Gun” stars their friend Jenny kicking some ass at tennis. The video also features a brother Jonas, a Wu-Tang mastermind, that dude from Donnie Darko, and the clown-man who sells Crunk Juice.

Mumford & Sons

Formed in 2007, Mumford and Sons are a collective folk band hailing from West London in the UK. They've gotten fairly massive in the UK and those who reside stateside and are familiar with Mumford and Sons, must be anxiously anticipating the US release of their debut album Sigh No More due out in the US in March of 2010. Luckily, I have a friend in London who was kind enough to purchase me a copy and send it to me last month. Mumford & Sons delivers one of the years better debuts. The album begins with the title track. As soon as you hear the slow build up with four-part harmonies, you know you’re in for a treat. Once the band kicks in with some fantastic arrangements including copious amounts of jamming banjo, you know this not what you typically listen to but you just can't seem to give your ears a rest.

The thing I like about this album is that the band pays attention to details, allowing you to get lost in the subtle intricacies and then blown away with big finishes. “The Cave” sounds like a tune that you would hear in a coffee house as it begins with simple strumming and slowly begins as the rest of the band joins in until they reach a frenetic finish. Perhaps it's a sort of metaphor for being held back. He sings, "come out of your cave walking on your hands, and see the world hanging upside down." In the final thirty seconds of the song, the person professes his need for freedom, and is not going to listen to what the others will be singing; he is finally living his life for himself.

"Little Lion Man" feels like the song is from the man - who sings - heart to himself. He is the heart. Listen to that tiny glimpse of something pretty close to mocking in the second line: weep for yourself, my man, you'll never be what is in your heart".
He - the voice -Is the the heart and the voice of the heart. And the heart, it belongs to the man. That way "It was your heart on the line."

"Winter Winds" meaning seems a bit obvious to me. The 'winter' in this song is a metaphor for loneliness. 'Was it love or fear of the cold that led us through the night?' The singer is now wondering if they were with this person due to feelings for them, or fear of being alone. The final verse is then the realization that whilst loneliness and bad times can seem scary, ultimately they do end, and with this realization it goes back into the chorus, of how he knows that he will never love this person, even though, as his head is telling him, it would probably be the best thing to do.

There is no doubt that this is my favorite album so far in 2010. I don't normally listen to folk music but Mumford & Sons has opened up a whole new world of music to me. Unfortunately I'm unable to catch them this Thursday at Bowery Ballroom but if you are, you will be lucky enough to catch an amazing performance.
